TERRIBLE TOBIN.

A SCOUNDRELLY SEDUCER.

Cruel Story From Cambridge.

Where is Mr. Tefein?

A case of the most impudent and daring double duplicity occurred at Cambridge, m the Auckland district, recently, when a villain named Tobin ruined a girl from Grey Lynn, George Fowlds' electorate, then, deserted her after foisting her upon an unfortunate boarding house keeper named Mrs Fraser. It appears that Tobin arrived with his "wife" at Mrs Fraser's eleven weeks ago, and the pair gave the names of Mr and Mrs Tobin'. Mrs Fraser is a poor woman, wbo has room for two boarders, and as Tobin represented that he had plenty of money the woman was made comfortable and a doctor and skilled nurse were engaged during the confinement, which took place three weeks after. "Mis Tobin" was then

BLESSED WITH TWIN SONS, and as Mrs Fraser thought that all she had to do was to ask for the cheque and receive payment, she attended to and fed the mother and infant children. But Tobin had disappeared, and the matter was placed m the of the police. It was then discovered that Tobin had picked up the girl at Gr<»~- Lvnn 32 months ago and induced her to travel round the country with him, the pair living as man and wife. When the girl wasn Rearing her trouble, they happened to be m Cambridge, and lie dumped her on to Mrs Fraser and cleared out, leaving his victim penniless* and burdened with twin children. Mrs Fraser has had the girl for over three months, supporting her and her children for humanity's sake. Indeed, the u»fordinate young woman has been m bed during the whole of that period, under the care of the local doctor, who will have to whistle for his fee. This voluntary charity has brought the landlady's finances to a very low ebb, and the inexorable landlord is now threatening her with eviction if she doesn't settle the rent. In these straits the local constable applied to the Charitable Aid Board for assistance for the unmarried mother and her infant children, and that BUMBLE BODY HUMMED AND HAW'D considerably over tke proposal. There was some discussion as to whether ehe Auckland Board was responsible. These temporarily important personages don't seem to realise that any moneys disbursed may fee recovered later from the loc*l tiody m the district from which th-t) beneficiary comes. One sfMisiiil*.- md*nber named Gavin rem;u !>'(•;! ' hat the utiestion , was not .the out* ;«;. is^u-. The \vul man and chi.JfU"'-;* '■<>-i?'! r.ot be allowed to starve, and sumiji thing should

be done. Tke matter of respo»sibility could lie settled afterwards. It was resolved to all«w tke iuifortusate young worn as £1 per week till next meetiag, aai ta make arrangements to send her hack to Auckland as soon as she was well enough to travel Meantime, terrific Tobin has had his fun, aad has escaped all responsibility. The police are, of course, scouring the country for the scoundrel, about whom little seems to be known. He might be a butcher. or even a baker—probably he is neither— but he appears to be the most brutally callous personage they have around Auckland. To take a young girl from her home and effect his evil purpose with her was bad enough, but to desert her with twin children, and ruin a kind-hearted woman who harbored her, is a triple offence that should take a lot of beating. The doctor (Roberts) appears to have attended the girl throughout OUT OF PURE CHARITY, And it is undoubtedly a fact that the unfortunate victim's prolonged illness is due to the stress of mind caused by her seducer's desertion. Had she died, her death would assuredly be at the door of the torrid Tobin, whose photograph would look appropriate with the walls of Mount Eden Gaol as a background. Probably that is where he will find himself when he is caught, and. it shows the anomalous state of existing institutions when the wrongdoer is supported hy the State m gaol, and his victim and her children also thrown upon the benevolence of the public (which is the State). Now, if the girl-tampering Tobin were - put to some reproductive occupation m gaol- (when he is caught), and made to support himself, his victim, and his children, there would be some sense about our prison system, which is bossed badly by Majah Jacky Hume's old man.
