According to a Yankee paper, there is at least one place m the world where crime is decreasing, and that is m Sydney, New South Wales. According to a statement made by one of the high Government officials there the Sydney jails are seldom occupied. There are fewer criminals m proportion to the population than ever before m the history of the country, and the Governor is wondering what use the jails can be put to if they become entirely deserted. Oh. rats. Why not convert the jails into churches ?

The ham and beef shopman will persist m doctoring his goods with boric acid preservatives. He is satisfied if the stuff keeps the small goods wholesome till he has disDosed of them to a customer • hut has no consideration for the latter stomach afterwards. The trouhle with all preservatives is that they counteract the digestive juices, and lay the foundation for dyspeptic misery. The health authorities would earn the gratitude of the public if they came down hot and often on $39 adulterators.
