Conservative member Herries is much v alarmed at the Government's intention to take over tlie municipa-lity-of Rotorua and 'rim it as a tourist resort. Rotorua is m the tail gentleman's electorate and enhanced Government influence might endanger this opposition seat. At any rate, Herries said the people of Rotorua didn't want, the town taken over, to which the Premier replied that the Empowering Bill was being passed at the request of the Rotorua people. Moreover, the Government had been approached to take over th? local racecourse and run races thereon, and Sirjpe was astonished that a sporting authority like Herries wasn't cognisant of the fact. But the Government had refused to take over the course. Mary Ann Aitken : "They did the right thing." Sirjoe: -'Wo always do the right thing." Then iooki«T significantly at Mary Ann. he said, "I repeat, we always do th* r ight th <"ng . " Turn ms- to Herries. the facetious Premier remarked : ''' might inform the honorable gentleman that if the Government had taken over the course, the running would be :;traj>ht fla ughter) : but thc Government has not. .taken it over, and has no intention of taking it oyer."
