MURDEROUS IM MEILSCH

A COWARDLY WIFE AND CHILD DESERTER. Morally He is a Bigamist. A Little History of the Teuton Tyrant, In June of last year a murderous, low, lazy brute of a German named Ernest Carl Max Meilsch made a most savage onslaught on the woman unfortunate enough to he his wife, and at a subsequent sittings of the Supreme Court m Wellington, . Chief Justice Sir Robert Stout very leniently let the Teuton off with a term of two years' imprisonment. This murderous fellow , Meilsch proved himself to be a dangerous wretch, for he had all along subjected the woman to a reign of terror. He had once almost bitten her nose off, and the. Magistrate at the S.M.s Court instead of sending the savage to prison without the option let him go on the payment of a small fine. Though not long married to the woman, who was a widow,, and a nurse by profession, PAeilsch represented himself to her as a bachelor, and after marriage the lazy loafer showed a remarkable inclination to shirk aaything m the shape of labor. He wanted to live and loaf on the woman- It prowed a miserable marriage. It was 5 a cat and dog exisence for both, and a few months of torture ended m Meilsch attacking her

WITH AN AXE m the yard of a Gh-uznee-street house. He indicted some terrible injuries. The brute left his victim for dead and .fed terror-stricken out of the city. He was arrested) at the Hutt and while m the lock-up, the cowardly cur attempted to take his owri • life by hacking at his throat with a pen-knife, which the police had failed to take from him when searching hi-m. The woman, who was left for dead, slowly ■recovered. Her injuries were great, and though the wounds have since h-eale-d she has not yet got over the f.-hpek. She is now a nervous wrecic and dreads the approach' of next February, m whioh j month her cur of a husband will be released from prison. That slie has good reasons to fear him there can be no doubt whatever. He is. a dani gerous man, a murderer by inclination, and h-e is bound to again attempt to molest the woman, who for her own protection has been advised to seek the permission of tlie authorities to. possess a revolver. In the circumstances, considering the nature of the murderous attacks on her by the Teuton she would be -perfectly justified m SHOOTING HIM LIKE A DOG on the first sign of menace from him. Since Meilsch was sent, to prison, some enquiries have been made concerning him m Germany, and the results arc interestiT.ig, inasmuch as they show the sort of double-dyed scoundrel the blood-thirsty German dog is. Quite recently, the ill-used wife, who lias been following up her occupation of nurse, received tho following communication from the German Consulate :— July 10, 1907. Begr Madam : I beg to inform ~ou that the photograph I sent home to the Police Department at Berlin, together with particulars and description of Ernest Meilsch, has been recognised as that of the laborer, Ernest Meilsch, born March 2, 187*4, at Charlottenberg, son of Max Meilsch, 38 Wilmersd'orfer, Chart ottenberg. He was ■ married on March 8, 189 G. with Charlotte Paech, born at Reppen, and left his wife since July. 1902. The marriage has been declared void by tlie Court at Frankfort, on October 11, 1905, on the application cf the wife on account of de--sertion. There were two children. (1) Walter, born July 15, 1897, at Reppen,: and (2) Frida, born November 8, 1902, and died January 11, 1907, at Reppen. When Meilsch married the woman he almost murdered m Wellington, this DASTARDLY WIFE AND CHILD DESERTER might have known that he had been divorced m Germany, though the strong probability is' that the dog i knew nothing of the kind, as wife I deserters keep their whereabouts as closely concealed as they possibly canIt looks very much . as if Meilsch was j ready to commit bigamy. At anyrate, he has committed an offenoe m declaring himself to b.e a bachelor, whereas he, at the time he married tlve woman m Wellington, was a divorcee. Perhaps he does not know of the fact that he is divorced and that his daughter Frida, whom he never knew, is. dead, as lie cleared aw?** from the mo-then: Ibefore the girl was -born. A beautiful Teutonic specimen this Max Meilsch man it, to be sure, wife and child deserter m Germany, wife-beat-er and

ATTEMPTED WIFE MURDERER in' Wellington, this city seems to have been unduly honored with his dastardly presence. What is more, however, to the point, is this, the fact of Meilsch being shown m liis true colors ought to convince his German friends, who have not ceased to, persecute tbe poor hutcherod-up wife with their dirty insults, that Mr Max Meilsch deserved c .Try day of the two years' gaol that Sir Robert Stout gave him. Meilsch has a lot of respectable German friends, whose sympathy for him is ill-deserved. Knowing Meilsch for what he is, they perhaps will have the decency to leave the poor woman alone and afford her every protection if Ernest Carl Max Meilsch should ever again attempt to molest her.
