TOTALISATOR INSPECTORS.

Sir,— l was pleased to see m your sporting notes of 6th inst. that you advocate the employment by the Goverrament of totalisator inspectors. I am qiuite sure it would be a move m the right direction ; it would to some extent safeguard ' : he investors at race 1 meetings. AH workers of totalisators, whether it be t>»fc Clubs theta selves, or contractors, if the/ desire to do what is right, should welcome the appointments. But since the advent of the new, or silent, totalisator, to give the public confidence something more than inspectors are required. Clubs have a time for nominations, acceptances, seratchings, etc.; why not have a closing time for the machine, say. five minutes before the starting tiJfte of each race. It can be done, and should be done. For if the totalisator continues to be worked as it was at the Wellington Autumn, and also at Masterton, there is no security for investors whatever. If. Mr Editor, you were present at the April meeting, you could not help knowing that hundreds of pounds were rung on winners after the horses had weighed m. Notably was -this the case m Earl King's, race, also De Witte's, yet, sir, there was 'not. ' one line written m defence of it by either of the Wellington dailies or the Weekly "Press."
