THE PORIRUA ASYLUM.
TO THE EDITOR.
Sir,— My attention was drawn : to your article on Porirua Asylum by an ex-attendant. I am myself a little interested m the institution as I held a position on the staff for a considerable time, leaving on my own accord on account of the small salary. I do not expect anything to come of the present agitation, as there has been many such, and ma-ny questions asked m Parliament and "out of it, Few people really case about the miseries of those who kave fallen m the battle of life ; they are out oi sight, and except for an. occasional flutter, like the present one, people •do not worry themselves about the inmates of asylums. There certainly is room for an enquiry to begin with. The committal to asylums is rotten, as under the present system no person is safe. If a Parliamentary enquiry 'does eventuate I shall be very pleased to offer my testimony ; also to produce a diary that was handed to me for safe keeping, by one who will come to light at short notice, if required. I can promise you that some of the records are startling. Wishing you success m your undertaking.—Yours, etc., LIGHT. Wellington, 'July 11^ 1907.
