THE BANK BOY'S BEER.

THE BITER BIT.

A sweet little yarn is being itold about an Ashburton bank clerk. It has become a custom m that town, for a sly-groger to import beer and spirits, m another man's name, and the police are thus thrown oK the scent, or, at least, it is alleged that they are. Very often the man whose I name is used doesn't know that it is I being den?, and sometimes things happen. Not long ago a keg otbeer arrived addressed to the bank official m question, and a carrier delivered it. The clerk was nonplussed for the moment, but soon "tumbled" to the trick. He speedUv gathered' m a few friends, and they proceeded to make havoc with the contents. Not Ion 2; afterwards the owner of the beer arrived m great haste ami demanded the cask, but the bank boy affected surprise. "Oh, well, I used your name without your sanction and I, apologise," said the visitor' between hurried breaths, "but the fact is I was too late getting to the station, ami the d carrier had waltzed it off to you ; please hand it over and I'll give you some of it.'' '•My dear sir," responded the clerk, . "a .cask of beer arrives here, and as ' it is addressed to me it is mine, i and I challenge you to dispute it. Yon have committed a very wrong act, and if I handed the beer over to you (which I wont) you would only break the law by selling it on: the sly. No, old man, I won't be a party to anything like that, [Step j inside, I'll give you a glass of my i delicious beer, but as for going the I whole hog (shead) sntl giving you the' } lot it is quite out of the question." < So a glass of bis own beer was all } that sly-groejger got, and his re- ! marks cb. things m general and the i perfidy ,ofe-,,bank clerks m particular | were ,quli>3-- put of tune altogefrher^'fff;}
