TOTALISATOR TALK.

Since writing an the question of Tot-alisatpr Inspectors I have been asked what are the probabilities of such appointments being made. Perscmally I think that Inspectors are gure to be appointed sooner or later, but just how soon will no doubt depend a good deal on. the noise made by the pub-lie. Most likely a Bill bearing on the tote, qufcution will he brought -before Parliament this session, but whether the Government consider Inspectors are necessary or not remains to be seen... It is believed fay many, however, that .the Colonial Secretary has -his eye' on* addit-. ional Income Tax, and alsoon •Wie fractions of shillings which now. swell the Racing Club 's revenue. Should this prove to be the case. the .JplubS 1 ! wiif'no "doiiW receive a hard blow,' but anyone who cares to go iaito figures will come to the' concliisiojii that they can well afford it.. Pr-6-baibly on" an average the odd money secured by tihe €lubs, over and above their legitima+e income, amounts to about 50 per cen*. of the Government, tax. Possibly m some .cases it would be nothing like" this, but mi n many bthe'rs it would be considerably more. The clubs have had a Io»g lease of these conditions, and the rigor with' which they have held to thenv has frequently roused the public indignation. There is time now before t/he G over nm-ent take action m the matter for the whole of the clubs to pay out to the nearest sixpence, and so save their patrons a little of the money that will otherwise, go into the 1 Government funds. And as ■ regards Inspectors, they might show good. grace by ask 7 ing for these to be appointed, and prove that m the past everything has been fairly conducted; aord that they • are only too willing to have their methods inspected and the public suspicions allayed.
