Two Trusted Servants m the Toils.

So-metihinp; of a sensation was caused m Wellington when it became known that the head men -m the well-known firms of Sargood, Son, and Ewen, and Mills and Co., had been arrested on charges of theft. The proprietors of both firms have beeri aware for some time that peculation was going on, and finally Mills and Co. invoked the aid of the police. It was not anticipated that this invocation would result m the arrest • of a trusted servant, John Henry Whitton, who has held a position of trust for some time. The discovery at Mills's led to the apprehension oE Henry "Norman Cossar, head man at Sargood, Son and Ewe-n's, and the two were brought before Magistrate Riddell yesterday. Whitton was charged with the theft on June 10 of a silver fish service, valued at £4, the propertyof Edward Charles Evelyn and' others. On the application of Mr Wilford, accused was remanded till Monday next. Cossar was charged with, the theft, on tho same date, of a lady's blue, costume, valued at £5, the property or Henry, Cromwell Tewsley and others. Mr Wilfor'd asked for a remand till Wednesday to permit of an inspection of .Sargopd's books being made. This was granted.
