THE COMING CONFERENCE.

The Racing Conference will sit m Wellington at the Chamber of . Com-,, merce rooms on. July 22nd, and .23rd. , A good >nany ' l o}& friends'' appear oh the drder paper, while several new and very important questions are- to be discussed. Among the' latter is one 1)? the H&wke's Bay Jockey Club which desires to limit the 'tween days of race meetings. It wants a two days meeting tn -be limited to three davsi. a three days' meeting to five days; and a four days' meeting; to eight days. . There is a great deal to be said m favor of this motion, but it is. sure to find very 'great opposition from the delegates of several clubs, motably the Wellington Club, the Auckland Club and the country clubs from the latter districts. The Ota^o country clubs', representative will move that "The totalisator shall be closed by the Judge (by means of electric bell or' other approved signal from tire Judge's box to the totalisator house) immediately after the start, and n o further i^ vestments .shall "be permitted after the tot-alisator ; has been dosed. If "by reason of a. false start or other-misc-onception the Judge should close ih? totalisator before the actual start, it shall not be re-opened for any further investment on that race except under Rule 17:" This is ' another motion that will bs received with great hostility by clubs which run their own totaMsators, but it would do away with a great deal of the opposition that at present exists towards tiae machine, and the betting public -would have miuch more confidence iii the working of the machine if they did nott BEe hundreds <of pouhds continually run up after the horses had passed the post. - The President's pet fad of licensing owners has as much chance of beinc passed as the stipendiary steward motion of the Stratford Club. Messrs J. W. Abbott and H. F. Johnston wiill represent the Wellington Metropolitan Club', hiit : ; iheir task will not be an arduous one, as the local Club are not moving for any reforms.
