KATE MOORE'S ESCAPADE.

It takes four sheets of y foolscap to chronicle the drunken escapades of Kate Moqre, an ugly-looking,- big-( •nosed Chaustohuroh ' identity who is on speaking terms with the police. Kate is a very hard case, and isn't" chaste. A woman oE the town,- fhe . has iivon ekeing out some sort of an existence for years, what time she hasn't been m. gaol., A flower of the nigiit the lady gels money easy, and gets drunk with, equal facility and suffers for her thirSt. She was up again the other day for beer, but this time 1 hey rung thel changes on her and brought her up under the Habitual Drunkard's Act. It was a 'bad accident for Kate — very bad m - deed— and when she was convicted i the Magistrate thought he/ would give her, a chance . to reform, and he committed her to the Samaritan Home for two years. The woman, : (Who thought that at the most' she < '- (would ,be fined a few bob, said that she had had a drink or two, but it took effect on her as she was extremely weak through being confined m gaol. She protested against going to the Samaritan Home, and •wanted to know if she couldn't foe Hetai'ried m! some other institution. It was gently pointed out to 'her ■ that she had no option/ m the . mat-. * ter^lae was toeing sent to gaol, and -if 'she misbehaved herself at the '•Home she 1 would be treated m precisely the ,same manner as she would be m gaol. In vain did the prisoner ' advance tier old familiar plea for a chanoe to leave the town ; , she was bundled out to do her solid stretch. Two -years seems a Ions;, time for a common drunk, but what are you going to do with these habituals .?
