STOUT AND OYSTERS.

HOW TO GET 'EM AT THE

EXHIBITION.

Mr. J. H. Pomeroy writes explaining the pfesence of stout m. his' oyster saloon at the Exhibition, commented upon by "Truth" some time back. His explanation is that customers' are allowed to bring their own stout and store it m his saloon, and draw upon itj-when required. He- says :—"Although an admirer of and a subscriber to your valuable paper, I must take exception Jio a paragraph concerning myself and appearing m your columns of the 16th date, m which you make it appear that I have been dispensing stout with oysters m my saloon. Now sir, nothing is further from the truth. It is perfectly true we have instituted a looker system for the free storage of liquor for the accommodation of our patrons who order and pay for their own liquors, but no liquor is sold or given away by us m the manner suggested by the paragraph m question. 'As the giving of liquor m conjunction with oysters, to customers, would constitute a sale m the eyes of the law, you would do me a favor by. contradicting m some way the paragraph m queition." How mad it must make the people who haven't a locker and can't find an accommodating pal to borrow from. Ever since stout was invented and oysters came into vogue as a supper delicacy the two have run m double harness so to fipeak. But the Christchurch licensing bench, brought its great silly hoof down on all th'tlt. And now, unless oyster suppers at the 'Zibition have become chronic with you and you have laid m a stock m Pomeroy'a locker, you have to eat your oysters on their own, and then do a half mile sprint to the nearest pub for the stout.. There's somethingweird- about these licensiig bench fellows. °
