A FEW ODD 808.

PERCY COLLIER'S AIRY INDIFFERENCE.

Some men are • born m trouble, some achieve trouble, and most men, and be is lucky indeed if an exception can be found, have . trouble, thrust upon them. The Hind of trouble thrust upon one young man named Percy Collier, who found himself m the dock at the S.M.s Court on Tuesday last, is a specimen. of trouble that many young bucks experience m fair, moral New Zealand. The little lot that Percy bumped up against on the day' m question 'was that one Louie Coulton had given birth to a child, illegitimate,- of course, and Percy was asked a duestion or two concerning his intentions. He made no endeavor /to hide his head m shame, but spoke ud. like a brick and declared himself guilty, but Mr Dunn, who appeared for the girl, told the Court that sinceV the proceedings had been instituted baby had ceased to exist, so the: only things that would troiible Percy would be to pay all the expenses .of accouchement, funeral, legal and- others, which totalled £9 12s; When it was announced that the child was , .dead the Beak sniffed . suspiciously and wanted to know if it had snuffed out m a Maternity Home ; but being assured that it had died m a respectable kind of way. the Beak turned his attention to Percy and wanted to know what lie was ;poing to do about it, and Percy, thinking he was an easy winner, reckoned that as he only had a few, odd hob on him lie did not know what to do. "A ffv odd bob." gasned the Beak, "you have £4 on you." It was next elicited that he was arrested at Feildinp, where he worked. Still, thintrs looked easy for Percy, and he was itchine to walk off ; and tbe Beak noticed it : so said m a cruel, heartless wav, "WeMl keep that £4, and you must pay .off the -£5 I2sat the rote of 10s per week. ..and, -if you fail T.'ll see what term .of imprisonment I'll give you."- Percy -then loft with ins -feathers' ruffled considerably.,, i
