POKING POLICE.

Oh Tuesday morning a poor innocent girl Was shot dead by a treach-* erous rotter, m Abel Smith-street. Her murdeirer was arrested soon after, by Constable Carmody. Then Sergeant McKay arrived at the hbuse Of the distracted mother and searched for* bullets. He found one, hut actually failed to take it with him to the inquest. That, however, .is only a side issue. What is of greater public interest is the fact -that after McKav, according to the '-'Evening Post" of the same day, Sub-Inspector O'Donovan, Dej tectives Kemp, Broberg, and Wil- ! liams, and other members of the force appeared on the'jfecene. The depositions of Mrs Axup and the young girl's brother were taken, and accused Was quietly removed to the Police Station. Now can any decent reason be given by any or all of /that mob of 'peelers f or forcing their presence ana silly questioning an the heart-broken mother of the poor girl at such a time of sorrow aiid poignant grief ? It was brutally indelicate, totally drinecessary and nothing, less than a gross outrage. The, case was a clear one of murder. The murderer was under arrest and .there was a sergeant m charge of the premises. What the devil did all the rest of the idle intruders want at the house? Friends say the place was like a police barracks and the tramp of huge; ill-booted feet over the floor of the house .made, residents m the vicinity think' Wellington had been visited by another earthquake. Can Commissioner Dinnie offer any excuse for this outrageous intrusion upon a bereaved mother at such a time *?
