A CHUCK IN.

FARMER WANTS FUN ,

And Makes Tempting Offer to a Young Woman to Bury Herself . Alive and Slave on a Cowery for Ten Bob a Week. The Gall of the Agricultural Golliwog. Some time back an advertisement for. a housekeeper for the country appeared m a local daily and one applicant has received the following reply from a little hole and corner, new, roadless and desolate settle-, nient m the Ma*rlborough province :— Dear, madam m answer to your application re housekeeper how old are you are you sober and of good carictor as I want one that wont mind the quiet Life of the country and one that wouldent mind milking a Cow if wanted to and ana' that is willing to stay, it is a small farm on the new settlement of estate and 14 miles from seddon railway statjon and 50 miles from picton I am middle aged single saber and stea-dy wages 10 shillings per week its not very large but there is n.ot much to do and will be a good home for anyone if this suits please send particulars and if I acept I will send word when and how* to come so that I could meet you. you to pay your fare to seddon railway station hut I would refund it yours faithfully Marlbprough. Now, what woman could resist the sweet seduction of that offer? A middle-aged, grizzly, hairy, uncouth, cow-spanker, up to his hips m barnyard muck, fifty miles from a town and fourteen from a railway station. Also probably several miles from any neighbor of the same dreadful class. Also the expectations of the "single, sober, steady" bloke are so naively made evident that ho woman m, her senses could fail to see them. And he all these— and evidently a young thing too, "sober and of good carictor" *~ share his bed and board and be a wife m all but name and respect, for ten bob a week. For the sake of New Zealand's womanhood it is to be hoped he has failed to get what he requires.
