CONTEMPTIBLE GATERER

TRIES TO THROW WOMAN DOWN STAIRS. Cowardly Conduct at a CubaStreet Cafe. Shameful Attack upon a Female. That the newly formed Cooks' and Waiters' Union for the Protection of this most deserving class of workers j came into being not a moment too soon is proved by a little affair which happened m a well-known Cubastreet Cafe last Saturday morning.] It appears that the establishment m question changed hands a short time ago, but the old proprietor remained m the place as .overseer, dishwasher or some such subsidiary position.* Apparently he still held some slight authority, for last Friday night he suggested to the manageress that she should take a holiday.

The lady, knowing the erstwhile boss Woke was no longer m a position to dictate to her as to what she. should do or should not do, thought this suggestion that she should taJde a spell a cute move to get her out of the place for good, and said she would think it over. On the Saturday morning the sometime . proprietor was infdrmed that the manageress did not propose to take the suggested holiday. The man was furious that his ruse had failed, aod straightway informed the lady that she must leave the place that night. She declined, and Jia^d she would go to the owner of the restaurant for her orders. Whereupon this brilliant example of manhood s 0 far forgot himself that he SEIZED THE WOMAN BY THE

THROAT and tried to force her down the stairs mto the atreet. A- fierce satru^le ensued, but the manageress was too strong for him, so this manly fellow summoned a policeman to his aid. The man m blue very properly declined to interfere, except to caution the cowardly caterer to keep his claws off the woman. Probably a summoning case for assault will be the outcome of th 3 scuffle on the cafe stairs last Saturday morning, and it is to be hoped this beauteous specimen of manhood will be taught that, whatever the nature .of a dispute between employees, there is no justification for violently attacking a woman m the manner lie was' guilty of.
