ANOTHER GUY.
(A contemporary notes that no appreciable slump m "guys" was observable on the fifth.)
By mere chance they shared a table m a restaurant, at lunch, And they got on very well— so well, indeed, That the lady hesitated not at his expense to munch Dainty sweeties, as an adjunct to the ■ feed. Then his language grew more ardent, unrestrained and eloquent; And she didn't say, "Give over!" sweet young thing, When he, eager to convince her that true love was his intent, On her finger slipped a valuable ring. And he told 1 her, that his Christian -name was Cyril, and thus cut Truth's acquaintance for the nonce, for 'twas a lie; But it chanced to bo the fifth day of November, and— tut, tut! Well, he didn't like to say his name was Guy! But when she, with charming candor, and a blush, but not of shame, : Told him of her lofty birth and social mark, He regretted his deception, and revealed his rightful name, And explained the reason why he'd kept ; ifc dark. "Oh, how silly!" laughed Edina. "I'm sure no one, east or west, . , Would compare you with tihe guys about the streets!" And, emboldened by her compliment, he ventured to suggest A short motor run beyond the city's beats. She !s said, "Wait till I step o'er the road to wire to my mamma!" And he- waited, but ho marvelled, by-and-bye, vVTiy it was that she returned not, and a waiter murmured, "Ah ! ■ . ' What' 3 her game? I'd like to say it's name is 'guy!' " . • . I All m vain our hero waited, and at last he had to go, Although not until for both the feeds he'd paid; ■Vnd, a few days later, came a screed, with nought insido to show I Where resided she who'd purchased the "cream laid." A ho found, enclosed, tho ticket for the ring she'd basely popped, A. nd she wrotcf) "For such a cheery Guy Fa-wkes' Day, \-j.'j accept my thanks; although, like you, I fancy that I stopped ' Just a bit short of the facts— that is to say, I kept back from you my married name, by way of tit for tat; Had I told the truth, and not employed a fib, • I You'd have quite expected me to go off suddenly like that — But I didn't like to say niy name was Squib!" . i j . -. .
