TAUI TE TAURIKARIKA.
Murderous Maori Monster.
•Hirini Taui, the Maori murderer, seems to have been generally regarded by Maoris arid Europeans alike throughout the North as a deceitful and desnerate character. His face was markedly criminal m type, and ca-rried a perpetual scowl, and his disposition was such as to make him hated and feared by everyone who had dealings with him. Though the greatest regret is expressed at the death of his hapless victims, there is common and unconcealed relief at the murderer's own decease, and it is felt that a wide district is well rid of a pestilent and pugnacious villain. Taui who had been accompanied by the old Maori Chief Wharepapa at ihe Maneakahia Maori land inquiry m Auckland, had but recently returned from there, and it seems probable Ihat his dastardly deeds were prompted by the "iisnicion that his own wife, with Mrs Kin-si, of Kaikohe, and Mrs Hona, of Kaihou, had teen worain* craftily together during his absence to rob him of his interest m the Mansralfahia land.
