With eyes that glisten and eager handa The chorus-girls open theiz Sydney mail ; . For the days are lcnfi m stranger . lands, ... And the stage's attractions grow flat and stale. So the hearts of the girls and the eye* o£ the girls , . Yearn and watch for the Sydney . fcoai, '. And there's radiant light m every eye As over their letters they fondly gloat. And, oh! but they're lovely, those chorus girls' eyes ; As brown as the brooic or as hlue aa the skies ! . .
"In every eye ?"— Nay, there is one sweet pair . In which no lights of gladness shine ; . • Instead, a wistful, sad despair . And a hare repression of sorrow's brine. For she is forgotten, oi all tbe band. And, the^ laughter and gladness round her hurt. She's far from home m a stranger land, , . ■ . ■• And nsver a line— however curt. The loveliest there, she might well expect ■ Kind letters of love— not cold neglect.
Ah ! did ye but know, ye friends afar. Ye careless lovers, -and all Jjesidey^ ,~=« How the wanderer feels, like a burnin^ scar.The 'apse that wounds, acd hurts the pride ; Ye would surely spare a half-hour apa^e . For a line of cheer to the wandering one ; To brine to her wistful eves and face A light" more doripus than the sun.
