FUNNY AFFILIATION FARCE.
Kate's Kapers and Konsequences.
About the quaintest affiliation, or semi-affiliation case oh record is re--ported from Christchurch. . A tall youn- man of the laboring class hamed Sidney Co o per, who appears to be a char of indecisive mind, had been paying attention to a lady named Kate McConaghv. '. To be more precise he paid her more attention than the code of morals allows, and quite lately Katie verily believed that she would, at a later date, bear the burden of motherhood. As she heard that her Sidney was about to depart to Sydney or thereabouts, she became alarmed, and as Sid's conduct wasn't as satisfactory as it might have been- m her eyes she '•'took the law on him." Cooper was thereupon arrested on a charge of being about to leave his present place of abode without making provision for his UNBORN. ILLEGITIMATE CHILD, of which Kate McConaghy was to be #e 'mother. Then happened a peculiar thing. Cooper was brought before Mr Day, S.M. , m his room and was released on his own recognisances to appeaT at Court later on. And m the presence of witnesses he practically admitted paternity. But when his case was called on he was represented ; by Mr Donnelly, who said that Cooper had told him that he .had been away from Christchurch many momtihs and consequently was dauthjiful as to whether ie was the father. "But," said the S.M., "he has practically admitted paternity, and said he was going to marry the glirl. -Now, it seems he is backing out- -of it." In View of this fact counsel then said he wouldn't 'contest paternity. The victim of Cooper's illicit carryings on didn't happen to be m Court, so the case was adjourned m order that she might l> e ■procured. But Donnelly threw the oase up, and when it was again called, on, Vincent appeared for the SAD-EYED, DEJECTED-LOOKING COOPER. , Then there was a new development. The fair Kate didn't look as though she. was about to become !i mother, and the defendant said he didn't believe that she was m the family way at - all. The youpg woman said she was, but the Court ordered another adjournment m order to have the, deMcate natter definitely settled. A call was made on a doctor, who pronounced the girl to be "that way," and the matter was mentioned again at Court next morning. Day, S.M., said he would order Curious Cooper to find a surety m the sum of £100 not to do a get without makin-- provisions for- the love child that hasn't yet seen the light of day. On the application of Mi_ Vincent he was allowed a few days ion which to secure s. bondsman, otherwise he would have to ruminate on love and lewdness m Lyttelton gaol for half a .year.
