WELLINGTON CENTRE.

Pjuvincial Championship Meeting.

.The committee of the Wellington Centre of the N.Z.A.A.A. have been 'rafting like Trojans to ensure the success of the big meeting on New Year's Day •at the Basin Reserve, and that it 1 will be a big. meeting is argued by the galaxy of talent entered for the various events. No such gathering of athletic topnotchers has been brought - together before, and, "iven fine weather, Wellingtonians will probably put this attraction before anything else for- Tuesday next. Wellknown athletes from the various centres' have .signified their intention of being present and a glance at the entries shows what fine contests may be expected. Among the milers are J., H. Prendeyille and Mulcahy : sprinters include Goodbehere, Webster and Fisher ; prbminent m the heel and toe act are, Kerr' and Ross ; amongst others T. Craig and Cook, of Nelson, will compete m the cross-timber events. Scotsmen will be interested sneciallv ■m piping and dancing, for which special prizes have teen allocated, and a gymnastic display by Messrs Harrison and Juriss' pupils is yet -iti'other feature' ; of a- 'gigantic pro- . -iramme;; £ate is assured -if the weather .keeps fine ■;

Mr Tuphy, who : was. 'referee m the Pearce-Scotit wrestling' match j competed m the Catholic picnic sports on Boxing Day, and, though it was three -*ears since he had stripped his shirt, he won the heavy-weight wrestling and "utting the 161 b shot ; a record that any man, let alone one of his years, might well be proud of. Everybody knew that Tom was a boss referee, but not everyone expected that he could still hold his own itf "all comers ••* company.
