A BASE SWINDLE.
Dupes of Chicago Bunco Steerer. A goldarned Chicagoite has been taking down people with a vengeance m connection with the Exhibition. He gave out that he was agent for the- Maoriland Government, and that he was empowered to make the appointment of superintendents for God knows what, at a salary of 65 dols. a month and keep: These superintendents were to look after exhibits, from sewing machines to incubators, from music to laundry machinery. And quite, a lot of mugs gave him a handsome commission for such nice jobs. They were apparently mostly men with a few dollars, as the trip from Chicago costs more'n a quid or two. However, the first victim sent along by this arrant • swindler arrived the other day and boldly walked into Manager ■ Munro's sanctum, presented his letter of "appointment," ■and asked when he could start work. Then Mimto tumbled to the fraud that had been perpetrated, .and the visitor ; :was speedily- disillusioned. Then he said things. . . The other : jpssers who fell m ma? arrive any day now. and the' meeting, of the crowd should be interesting when they discover how tbev have been duped.' If they could only lav their hands on tl?e CbicciEro frreen-goods man ' things would happen sure enough/ ' .
