The worthy Hindes is, or was, a jeweller by trade, and at the present time resides not a hundred miles from Marion-street. But selling watches and suchlike knicknacks did not promise to be an easy road to wealth, so Hindes waded m to angle for mugs. He was the up-to-date spider, also very much "fly," and when he offered to lay £6 to 2s about the Feildimg double, his parlor was soon crowded. Among takers was a certain fair lady whose winsome smile charms the thirsty patrons of the Clarendon Hotel. The damsel planked down .her couple of Roberts and breathed Ballarat and Ghoorka into Hindes' lug. As it happened she was a dam sell alright for this beauteous bookie, for when results came South Ballarat ami Ghoorka it was. Now the charmer waits with longing eyes for the entrance of the horrid Hindes into the hospitable Clarendon bar, with her six quid and two white 'uns. He hadn't blown m to time of writing, his nearest approach being a couple of stealthy peeps through tlie hotel window. Double chasers will probable think twice before giving their custom and cash to this- jugKiinn; jeweller man henceforward.
