HELLISH HAASE.

INCESTUOUS PARENT SENT TO PRISON. A Feilding Fiend Debauches His Own Daughters. Ab Extraordinarily Lenient Sentence. There came up to receive -sentence m the Supreme Court last Tuesday a fiend m human form, whose confession of having debauched his own daughters saved the country the expense of putting the unnatural brute upon his trial. The individual m question is a sandy-complexioned, middle-aged German, named August Edward Haase, whose low brow and general hangdog appearance indicate the possession of strong brutish passions. He is a farmer, of Feildin^. where up till a few weeks ago he had resided with his wife and family, all of whom are

grown up, one at least being married. There are a number of daughters m the family and from what can be gleaned the German brute has for soW.e rears been carrying on incestuous intercourse with one of his daughters, wKSSe age now is about 19 years, and v who, moreover, is about to become % mother as a result of this terrible lilfiatural conduct of her father. ' Not omY is this all. The beast was not sained with having debauched and ruin?d his nineteen-year-old daughter, buit^ejurther satiated the w CRAVINGS. OF HIS CRUSp LUST on another daughter, who is "^couple of Tears younger. The condition of the elder girl 1 of course attracted attention and qu&>~ tions were asked, with the result thai the truth came out and charges of incest were made against the wretch. There is a sou m the family, and when trouble began to loom largely on Haase 's horizon, that dirty, cow- ■ ardlv animal endeavored by broad suggestions to throw the blame on this son lii this he 'did the young feilow a damnable wrong.- He is a steady, decent lad, and the debauched daughters, naturally averse to an exposure involving the gaoling of their own father, were afraid more than anything else that their brother, evidently possessed of true, manly instincts, would do his vile progenitor some physical injury, Haase is a violentrtempered man, ..another . indication, of his*-aj»mal -*.na-?-ture, and It seems that he created a. perfect REIGN OF TERROR among his unfortunate daughters and forced them to yield to him. It had been going' on for some time and Haase 's wife apparently never had I any suspicion that anything' was i wrong m the family. When the accused was charged before the Feilding S.M.s Court, he pleaded guilty and he was committed to the Supremo Court for sentence. He came up before the Chief Justice last Tuesday, and when asked if he had anything to say why sentence should not be passed upon, he could say nothing m extenuation. The Chief Justice told Haase that he had ruined two of his daughters and 'his misconduct had been going on for some years. After reminding him ~that he was liable to 20 years' im-. prisonment for his crime, Sir Robert Stout passed what m the circumstances is the very lenient term of seven years hard labor m Wellington Gaol. .
