THE ENGLISH HEAVY-WEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP.
Moir Gets the Verdict on a Foul. By far the most important boxing match arranged this season took place on October 31 at the National Sporting Club, Covent-garden, where Jack Palmer, of- Newcastle, and Gunner Moir, late of the Royal Marine Artillery, met to compete for the above title, together with stakes of £200 a side, and the club purse of £350. Moir fairly earned his right to challenge Palmer, who held heavy-weight championship by reason of -a long sue.cession of victories, the last of which, ; and most important, was over the Irish-American boxer, James - Casey, last season. Palmer was favorite, but Moir landed several terrific body blows m the first minute, and thus early had his man weak. Indeed once Palmer was nearly out. Moir kept his man busy m the second round, and wound up with a good lead, but rather exhausted himself with his endeavors to get m the upper-cut, and Palmer recovering himself steadied his rival with a couple of fine 'lefts. In the fifth, however, Moir. again secured the upper-hand, and only the call
of time and his fine generalship saved Palmer from a knock-out. Both went weak m the next lew rounds, Palmer avoiding punishment very cleverly, and Moir exhausting himself m his endea* vor- to bring off the winning hit. S o the affair went on until m the ninth round Palmer was again all but out, and then clinging round his opponent m his distress, he twice hit Moir low. Seeing this Mr Douglas got into the ring and promptly' disqualified the, holder, Moir getting the verdict amidst ringing cheers. The ending was disappointing, but Moir thoroughly well earned his victory.
