Idaeus should cop next time. Letherin orily started once and ran badly at Feilding. Mataari was very unlucky m his efforts at -Feilding. Cassiopea is galloping better now than ever previously. Submarine still gallops well and is a sure winner -shortly. All going well good things may be expected of Gold Seal. Clanchattan got a very" bad run m the Manchester Handicap. . The Seaton Delaval horse, Togos, has been sold to a Sydney buyer. The fields m the Scurry at Feilding comprised a very useful lot of maidens. . T. Williams took Waitati to Woodville at the conclusion of the Fettling, races. . . .... \ Nova ran sluggishly at Feilding and he was being kicked into it the whole way. Paddy McLaughlin took Contender and Immolation to Feilding but failed to score. Immolation is -now owned by Dick Johnston, formerly a jockey m the Taranaki district. H. Cutts will bring the Choke-bore team to Awapuni, while his father will go to Ellerslie. At the Feilding meeting Bandmaster was second m the Hack Hurdles on both. days. -> Taupo, who ran seoond m the Scurry at Feilding, is a half-brother to Swop and Rook-by. Reservoir, the full brother to Douche, has shown his connections some good track work. Bourasque ran two good, honest races at Feildinp:, and he will run better about Christmas time. From what I could see of Handsome, at Feilding, he appeared to have a different style, at every fence. Pytchley was first out m the Nikau Hack at Feilding but cried enough when., the straight was reached. •,..'' Mahoe was backed, for the Hack Hurdles at Feilding •on "the second day but he had the misfortune to fall. The \\»3ll-known Awahuri boniface, Mick O'-Reill~ owns' a useful sort of horse m Taupo, by Chasseur from Unknown. Lady Beresford is m great form at present and should add- a number of wins to her record before the season closes. Contender hopped out of the 'barrier very smartly' m the York Stakes but was quickly headed by Scotch Reel, and Lord Soult. F. Lind rode two seconds on Romany King at Feilding. This was Frank's first -ride since his accident at Bulls m September. The Fordell , hor.se<man, W. Price, who was injured at the C.J.C. meeting, arrived m Wellington for a spell b~ the mail train on Saturday night. Rookby was made favorite for the Wai tuna Hack Hurdles on the first day of the' Feilding meeting. He ran,, a good race and is evidently improyA big commission was worked locally for Wailethe an the Fitzroy : Plying; at Feildirig ; Tjut the Lethe mare was never prominent during the race. 'Frisco seems to have plenty of pace, • but will .probably run better when he has done more racing. As. yet he 'does not appear to grasp the business. On the first day of the Feilding meeting Maharanui ran a good race under difficulties ; but on the second day be was not sighted m a good position once during the voyage. If ever there was a good thing on paper it looked to be Lady Neil m the Maiden- at Feilding ; but she had no earthly, and F. Davis was into her with the hooks the whole way. Swop, who ran fourth m ,the Rongotea Hack Hurdles, looked better than I have previously seen him. . He will probably be at the Waikanae meeting, and may be good enough to win there. After- W. Young got thrown from Rose.grove at Feilding he was very ■dazed and reeled all over the track, but game as a pebble, he was up m the next race and rode his mount, Taupo, into second place. Achilles ' was set a severe task m the Feilding Stake*. The two-year-old Glencullbch appeared' to have all the -best of it<at the figures, and.that was how* the matter ended. ,It may be. allowed that Achilles' did not show true- form, but what a marvel lie would have to be' to beat . a good two-year-old at w-f-a. conditions.. The owners of Splendid Idea receivr ed a severe reverse when the chestnut mare was defeated m the York Stakes on Friday last.. She got away very badly and was never near the winner, Lord Soult. -Should think not if the time was correctly clocked, which seems very doubtful. Sid. Reid had a little excitement with his- mount, Ngaruhoe, m the Maiden Hack Scurry at Feilding. The bay horse has a nasty manner of whipping 1 round on his hind legs and m one of these playful moods it threw a somersault over the rails: Fortunately neither horse nor rid.;r were injured.
Armamento is again m work at the Hutt. ... V. Cotton did the riding for H. Denton at Feilding. Roseplot requires a lot of elbowroom when lie jumps. Scotch Reel failed ' to run up to expectations at Feilding. D'Nil was hurt recently at Fordell J and he has had to l>e thrown out of work. The Feild"ing Jockey Club put £26, 65$ through the totalisator for the two days. Svt'agsanan did not, as it was anticipated he would do, accompany W-aitati to Feilding. Roseal ran a good race on the second day at Feilding and he should win at Christmas time. Operetta" ran a really fine mare m the big race at Feilding on Friday last and should win 'a. good race soon. Haydn and Kaitere had the finish of the Rakino Steeples to themselves, and m the end the old horse pre- ! vailed. Royal Blue is m eood form just now, but the Merrie 'England gelding has still a bad habit of running second and third. As usual Alec. Hall has a lot of polish on Apiti, and the son of Handsome Jack 1 and Finesse won nicely at Feilding. Considering; his heavy impost Montigo registered a.good second m the Welter Hack at Feildirig. The Strowan gelding runs like a stayer. I understand the' course proper at Feilding is to be widened^ This is : a step m the right direction, considering; the big .fields that compete there. Golden Cairn put •m a sensational run m the Railway at Feilding—a ■ striking contrast to his miserable display on the previous day .•.•.-■• .-. . ■ . • ■... Wind appeared, to be very tired. when Golden Cairn questioned him at ! Feilding,. , and it was only clever and patient riding that landed him a winner. .. , • . G'hoorka appeared to be galloping well on the second day at .Feilding, but a heavy weight and a .bad run probably settled the black son of Lochiel. The Hutt trainer, J. Lowe, who went to Sydney with Solution, has returned to New Zealand and was to be found m his old quarters at the Hutt this week. A legal luminary, a well-known Wellington owner and aii equally well-known horseman supported the winning double, Ballarat. and GhoorI ka, at' Feilding. Wanganui whackers say that there won't be one of them at the Palmer<;ton or •Auckland . races on Boxing iDav on account of the sculling match, Stanfrury v. Webb. It is worthy of note that Apiti and Wind, who scored m the Hurdles and Welter on the second day at Feildinf. won the corresponding races this time last year. Charley Price was engaged to ride Lord Soult aft Feilding but -7.2 was too light for him and. he was compelled to stand down and lose a winning mount m consequence. The connections of Douche. expected their mare to run very prominently m the St. Andrew's Handicap ; but she pot a bad bump when going well ami this cxtinguish&d her chance. The purchaser of Togqs turns out to be. Sir G. Zillies, of Ballarat, arid the. price, paid was 250 guineas, which seems to be a' bit more than he would have brought m this country. The York Stak^? at Feildinp; proved a Cakewalk for. Lord Soult, who was credited with lmin 13 2-ssec for the six furlongs. The race was robbed of a little interest by Splendid Idea n-etting. all the worst of the start. Mr E." Goodbehere, the energetic secretary of the Feilding Jockey Club, deserves a word of praise for the thorough manner m which he got through his work at the spring meeting. Things- were as well regulated as a post office clock. The San Fran (teldina; Waihuka was hopelessly left m the Maiien Hack Scurry^ at Feilding. But for this Jenkins' mount mipht. have been among the prominent onras, as the horse appeared 'to be galloping well when doiif -his pfelimiriarr. Considering Douche's recent form it is. extraordinary . that the daughter of Jet" D'*?ai should be allowed, to pay the . limit m the Manchester Handicap at Feilding. Whittaker had her looking • well", but., she. was., very : nervous and sweated freely before the big race each day. W., Young was very fortunate when Rosegrove stumbled Ywith him at Feildinig, The Rangipuhi horse ged his- rider a good many yards before the latter could free his, foot from on© of the stirrups. A more vicious animal might- have made a hole m the list of licensed jockeys. Although the veterinary surgeon pronounced Armistice to be suffering from strangles there is hope that the Mahaki mare, will be sent td the post to contest the Auckland Cup. : The luck seems very much against the little mare, but should she go to Auckland m the form she showed at Canterbury it will take* a good one to lower her colors. Clanchattan was well backed v for •.the Manchester Handicap, but the bay colt was quite incapable of extending either Operetta. or Douche. The latter had a very bad passage an the St. Andrew's Handicap, .but m the Manchester she gave nothing a cliance. Should she retain her present form a little more weight will not prevent her winning. Each of the three placed horses m the Scurry at Feilding were paying over £20 to win. This would look as if punters were.very wide of the mark, but the start may have had something to do with it. The sixteen starters gave a lot of trouble, and after nearly twenty minutes delay they were despatched m rather mixed order. On the whole the starting at the meetinc was srood. Since its Easter meeting the Jockey Club at Feilding has made one or two improvements to the racecourse. One of these is the erection of an afternoon tea house at the South end of the saddling paddock, which has considerably added to the beauty of the place. The racing track has also been improved by the banking of th? home turn. On St. Andrew's Day, iliis turn was very dusty, but when the turf has had time to secure a holding the bend will be easily negotiated.
Fields and dividends at Feilding both very large. The new tan track at Trentham is fast approaching completion. W. Price has definitely decided to give un ridinn- over obstacles. Apologue is meeting with a lot of support for the Auckland Cup. White Lie is now m active work under T. Quinlivan- at Hastings. The Merrhvee filly. Arc Light, is now trained by F. Tilley at Fordell. Lomaria looks the best of the field engaged m the Asbhurst Guineas. ' There is very little chance of Achilles being sent to Auckland to contest the Railway Handicap at the Cup meeting. The rider of Glencullooh, who won the First Feilding . Stakes, was presented by Mr A. Dunbar, a steward of the Feilding Club, with a gold mounted wlii«. Mr J. Duncan has purchased from Mr G. G. Stead the two-year-old filly, Miss Phyllis (Multiform— Barley Bre&). The youngster was sent to Waikanae last week. Staying .has- never been a strong point with- Ballarat, but apparently her trainer thinks that she might improve m that direction as she" has been nominated for the, Ashhurst Cuip. When Windy was racing m these parts many people were, of th<& opinion that &he would be eligible for the 14 v2 class, .However, sme. , ,,was shipped, .to India a ..couple, of months back', and at Calcutta she was measured v but failed to .. pass the standard, ... ...,'■-• ....
