CHRISTCHURCH GRABALLS
A CLUTCH ON CASH THAT BEATS BULLDOGS
Seven Pounds Ten a Day!
A gentleman- wnor was en roule, with a lady and little boy. to Kngland, and who had' to 'put up for a time m Christohurch, writes his experience of ; a Canterbury landlord's methods. Efe says :— We arrived m Chi'istchiueh i>a Friday intoning and went to Ilia Rotherßelp Hotel, where an exorbitant jdemand for. £7 10s m advance, foir a week, for two adults . and a child', was acceded to. Well, we got word that we had to leave for London on • Saturday ' nieiht, •thus only staying- one day at this hotel. I uaturallv asked the landlord for /-a . rebate on account, of only being there one day instead of seven, but he refused any refund. I want you to point out to the public 'itfre action of ' this fellow,.;, who undoubtedly took advantage of the fact that we had to jro awi\y and could not take any lejraPistcps to recover our money, so that may know what to expect v.iicn inclined to patronise his house. On the face of these facts it would appear tflat this landlord has put a high mark on the Grab record that will nmke every graspiug graball of the Christchurch bandit gan^r turn green with lenvy and strive to cjnulate. It is indabitablv true that the landlords of the Cathedral City are ' ; out for plunder and intend, malting sufficient during the Exhibition to be indepettflent of Lhe hasli tower trade thereafter. But such piratical methods are calculated to do a iot of harm to the big show, by frightening away all persons of only moderate means.
