CONCERNING BACK YARDS.

-:■■:; :TQ THE EDITOB. | Sit,— ln reading through a couple of the late .editions of "Truth" I noticed mention of the dirty state of bdck yards m this neighborhood due* as far as I cap make put, to! the carelessness of -the dustmen . employed by the City Council. Knowin-l the dountry well I started a little investigation, on mvown. I spoke tol-the dustmen and they asked me to. 1 ac•companv them, which I did, to a half-dozen backyards that were quite enough for me. I am quite satisfied it is no wonder the yards are not cleaned up. In every instance the regulation tin . (wooden boxes or open kerosene tins,' oil drums, etc.) were either full of water, or containing putrid matter of a lively nature that required some catching before it could be dumped into the basket. Now I ask you Mr Editor m fairiess to Corporation employees, is it right to ask , a man to handle a basket containing such as these . baek-yalrds had heaped up for the dustman. In a" couple of instances where the recep- • tacJes odntained water there was fully; \ fifty yards to carry" it, ' and up, a couple of. flights of steps at that: * I would like you to bring befote the householders of Wellington's ' notit^i the fact that these men employed by i the 'Corporation are human Dein#s, | not mere things to sneer and! laugh at when a stream of sbup^like matter is noticed running, down their backs. I should like to know myself what our inspectors are doing, and if there are any regulations to protect such men as these who daily risk their lives, at a small wage, for the public benefit. In conclusion' l would like to state that anyone doubting the truth of this stateiri-ent has only s;ot to sH, eves on the dustman's back, or get on the lee side of his cart. Hoping you will investigate further and wak« up the right authorities.— l am &c. FAIR PLAY. ' Adelaide Road, Oct. 10.
