REEFTON COURSERS.
A Good Place for Greyhound Men to Stay Away From, The Reefton Coursing Club is, strange to say, affiliated with the New Zealand Coursing Association, but, if all that is said and has been printed is true then the Association should, for its own good napae's sake, ask for and insist upon having some explanation of its methods. The other day, seeing a coursing, matoh advertised to be held under the Reefton Club's auspices the wellknown Petone trainer (and ex-chani-pion athlete) J. Troy, took down three of Mr George Murfitt's hounds, to compete for the stake, with which he had won under all judges and against the best dogs all over the colony. Spongecake, for instance, had just . 'beaten the best at Martinborough, but he was put out by two judges at Reefton, the second one being the father of a young man. who had a dog running m the stake. Of course it was an unheard of liberty for anyone but the official judge to po into the box at all, let alone one so nearly interested as this, person was. The slipper also is said to ., have had a dog running and, as a j fact, the four dogs which divided the ■' stake were owned by committeemerv. So palpable was it iihat Sporcgecake, who led up and killed, was not defeated m his course, that Troy is prepared to put up £100 to £50 thati his charpe can beat the dbg that was given the decision over him ; if either Messrs Rutledee, of Dui*edin, or Mitchell, of Oamaru, do the judging. There is evidently a nice little family nartv carrying on coursing at , rocky Reefton, but it vrlll be just as well for outside sportsmen to "refrain from hutting m, no matter how tempting- may appear the bait.
