THE RANGITIKEI MEETING.
The handicaps for the above meeting were declared on Saturday last. Mr Henrys was present at the Marton meeting and consequently had the form there to guide him m making the Bulls adjustments. In the Plying Handicap, Ballarat is placed with lib of Kremlin, who is at the top of the handicap. The black mare has been off the scene for
i a long time, dndiDiay not: start, but ! even if she goes . to the.' post I think she. . will be beaten, as in' my opinion, thojigh a really good mare, weight stqpfs her. In looking up Ballarat's.. record I oan only find one instance where she won • with any weight o'ri her back, and that was at .Woodville nearly two years a-go, but m that case the opposition was very moderate and the distance , only five iur- . longs. Gleam, 8.5, is very well at present and should win again. Jolly Friar, 8.4, showed up prominently at Riccarton last month and should win i a race at the meeting. Grand Slam and Splendid Idea have each received 7.13, and then there is a drop of 14 His to Fontenoy. The big fellow is not ready yet, but after a little racing he will be found carrying a lot more than 6.18... » St. Bill, with a pound less than Fontenoy, will have to improve a lot. The St. Clements gelding failed to repeat his hack form m open company last season. Miss Adeline, 6.10, and Tautoru, on the -minimum,, should possess chance's. ' . |I .{, '/• ■■■ . 'Thirty horses haye.Tjeen weighted for the, Willowbank' |l^ck' Steeples, *a/tfd amongst them are.i se^e^al previ©ll! winner's over country. Narcissus, 10.13, Brenda, 10.12, and Westward, 10.3, are a likely trio. Sardonyx has 11.9 m the Hack Hurdles, and then conies Oryx with a stone less. On Riccarton form, Mr Barclay's horse should beat the rest of the very moderate lot opposed to 'him.
In the Ran'gitikei Steeplechase Kiatete has 13.2, or three pounds more than he carried into second place last year. The Feilding horse was m great, buckle at the National meeting and won the Beaufort Steeples m an easy' fashion; never giving his opponents a chance. Hutana, who won the same raceJast year, has 11.7 m this contest 11 The old fellow should be the hardest to beat after Kiatere. Hikairoa, H0.3, looks to have a qbaince, and /these three should finish m front of 'the rest.
.Slirapnefi 9.0, is m a class by himsfelf, comr&lMwitto the rest of the [■field m the r; Spring Handicap. Landi>w»rn, 7.9 h and? Moritigb, 6.12, ap- \ pear to possess chances; but the remainder ofc'the field are a very poor lot.- ■ • :j: "--- : " • The Rangitoto Hack Handicap should furnish a good .race. Rosegrove, '9.0, and Moloch, 8.11, each won races at Marton, and Honyhmhmn, 8.9, should keep them both galtoping. Mataari, 8.0, and Albuera, 7.9. might be 'the most dangerous of .the remainder of the field.
