BEAK BISHOP BACKS RORTY ROWE m BANNING "BOWER" CHALLIS.
Rorty rowser Rowe, the New Brighton (Christchurch) bobby whose little antics have been the cause of a considerable amount of discussion lately. has ;; at last had his revenge over W. C. Chaliis, the proprietor .of the Bower Hotel, who was fined a tenner, lately for a breach of the Licensir- Act when Rowe's action wasn't shown up m a too favorable light. However, the beak decided to Convict, and Chaliis went up. Well on Saturday the Avon Licensing Committee met to deal with applications for renewals, and that, of Ghallis was refused. The beak (BishopV charged at the Bower jn an like a bull at a gate, and didn't allow any palavering. The license wouldn't be granted him, he said ; the conviction was against him, and that -was sufficient justification for the refusal. He made no bones' about it, but' the matter was adjourned for a month m order to give the proprietor an opportunity to sell out. It is understood that he has already done so.. Rorjy rowser Rowe is naturally as pleased as Punch pver the blessed business, and .the new proprietor, whoever he may be. will be' obliged to keep his eyefskinned if he doesn't want to be deprived of his living m such a summary wa^ as Chaliis was. It isn't so easy for a publican to make a living m these days . especially when a police "iirm' lavs* an information against a man for permitting a breach of the A^ct after the former was sent for to order the tnani out.- Things are getting too strong altogether. If a place was improper-. X conducted this paper would he the first journal to show it ud. but since Chaliis took possession of the Bower it has been all that could be dei sired-,
