SQUIRES CAN BEAT O'BRIEN.
Philadelphia's World's Champion Not a Wonder.
Jack McDonald's Opinion— Could Give Bill Some Pointers.
Writes 'Jack. McDonald (with" Hock Keys), from Philadelphia, July 17 :
"We saw the great O'Brien godast night with Sam Berger, and from the pinnacle of my imagination on which, I had him placed he has received a nasty fall. He is distinctly not the man I thought he was, although a great fighter and a wonderful business man. Berger, the man O'Brien fought, is a young giant about the size of Felix— game to a fault, and with no experience ; he has never fought a professional fight before. Berger -did splendidly. I thought two or three times he had O'Brien m trouble, but he is slow and can't take advantage of openings. Squires would lick Berger m about one round. Berger resembles Bill Thompson, •but is not as clever or fast. Peter Kling would, give him ah excellent go, and, ,1 think, would lick him. Now, I [ know for a certainty Berger Was drinking m New York with Jimmy Britt, Willie • Britt, ; Frank Clark j (from Australia), and a lot of 'Frisco sports who came East alter .the 'quake; and they made things, hum .m New York as long as their dough pasted, and then they departed for ;.the dust and ashes of San Fran., 'sadder arid wiser men ; but they certainly had a good time. Coney Island and- Broadway 'were alive with them. We were initiated into the brotherhood, as we knew all of. them, and the fact of us having been m the earthquake made us one of them.
"You can tell Bill Squires not to .be a bit scared of O'Brien or any of his bluff, as ; m my opinion, if Squires has improved at all, he should lick O'Brien. One of Squires' wallops m the body will put O'Brien out of commission. He squirmed last night the only time Berger landed on his stomach, and. could the big novice only have repeated the operation he would have had O'Brien m Queer-street.
"Dan Creed on m his good days would have' beaten O'Brien easily, but when Pan met O'Brien he was all m, and had given up' training, only what, he did m saloons. O'Bi'ien is shifty on his, feet, bait, what you read m American papers is all skite. I think now Squires has a chance ; before I had seen O'Brien I thought 'poor Squires.' But now I have a different opinion. "O'Brien asked us wtiat Squires was like, and, of course, we told him he would be easy money for him (O'Brien), and both Hock and I. really thought so ;' but now O'Brien is down to zero m our estimation. I can't tell you how. I would like to see Bill Squires win. I wish I was m Australia ' when Bill is training. I have a notion that if, he could do a certainthing or two he would surely win."
