Mary Vaughan's Vagaries.
Twelve Months' Hard Labor.
Being an incorrigible vagabond was the charge Mary Vaughan hit up against at the Magistrate's Court, on Wednesday last, when, after "supposin' she were," as she modestly put it, a bench of Jay Pays estimated her course of conduct at a fair figure by awarding her twelve months' hard.
Station-sergeant McPhair, who held the brief for the police, up and told the Bench a. few incidents m Mary Vaughan's varied career. At a late hour on Tuesday evening, Mary, who is far from, beautiful, was drunk and m the company of others who were filled to the neck with hop-juice, and as her language was far from ladylike, Constable O'Connor thought it due to him to take a hand, and he did. Mary played up to the sky and fought hard, but O'Connor clinched, and soon Mary jerryrumbled that ju-jitsu was not her long suit, and she was eventually landed high and dry m the lock-up.
Mary had 28 previous convictions for drunkenness, vagrancy, incorrigible rogue, etc., and m November of last year received a sentence of six •months for being a rogue and a vagabond. She was, according to the Sergeant, always, to be found wandering about m the early hours of the morning. It was necersary that something should be done for her
