G.N. Steeples Won by Phaetonitis. (From Our Special Correspondent.) TUESDAY NIGHT. The weather on the opening day. of the above meeting, was the worst experienced for many years. In the morning light showers fell, and m the afternoon nearly all the events were contested m the rain. Despite this drawback the attendance was <|uite up to the average and the number of visitors was very large. The racing was very interesting and not a single easy victory was scored during the day. At -th? bottom Kaitere unseated Howard and Irish and Phaetonitis were left m front with Pipi. Phaetonitis had most toe and ran m an easy winner from Irish. Togos, Jolly Roger and Gazely comprised the leading division m ■the earlieir stages of the race, Curiosity beins left at the barrier ; entering the straight the latter ran up to the field but the effort told and he died out. Gazely drew out a furlong from home and won by a couple of lengths. Half a length separated second and .third horses. Time, lmin 22 2-ssec. Dividends, £8 As 6d and £5 4s.
