IN THE TWILIGHT GREY.
Sometimes at even in the twilight grey, In the pale shimmering of passing ' day, . When faded scenes to memory grow clear, . ' ' ' - And time-hushed voices seem distinct and near ; . With thought all lost amid the mystic haze', Into the glowing fire I sit and gaze, And with a dreamy sadness fondly, trace The lovely, outlines of a' gentle face. j Though five long years have passed into' decay I Since last we parted in the- twilight grey, Oh, winsome face, with sorrow's i tears all wet, j My heart is aching, for I love thee yet. It is a love I cannot choose but bear, ; My spirit yearns, I cannot choose but J care. . Oh, tender eyes? Oh, fair and kindly brow ! Through mists of years methinks I ■ see them now. Sometimes at even in -the festive-! room, « • With song and laughter we dispel the gloom ; : j With merry, mien I join the trivial - lay, , ] While bitter anguish wears my; heartaway. Gay melody from gladsome hearts -i may flow, The trees may, whisper and the -breezes': blow, The birds may sing, all Nature-may-rejoice — /There is no music save my lost one'si voice. I know no passion ; 'tis a dreary Pain ; I can but hope, yet fear that hope is' vain: Till night is ended and the veil is. drawn ; I wait, I trust, I hunger for • the dawn. Oh, the deep misery of lonely love ; I pray, I strive, I lift my soul .above. Giver of Love, Thou knowest what I feel, Maker of hearts, Thou knowest how to heaL -J. F.
