BRUTISH BLACKGUARD BOOBED.
# , — A Magistrate Who Knows Something.
A foul-mouthed individual, who belongs to the bookmaker fraternity, got his just deserts at Ohristohurch for using obscene language and refusing to leave Tattersall's Hotel when called upon to do so. His name is Michael Heslip and he is well-known to the police, too well known, intact. He was io the open bar and put his arm round the barmaid. The* 'lady resented the impudent fellow'sfamiliarity, and on doing so lie used most dirtjj obscene language to her. I He was pitched out of the pub by the i porter. Next day, when? he had somewhat recovered from the whisky* he [had SO HOGGISHLY ABSORBED' and under the influence of which heclaimed to have misbehaved himself, .he went round and tendered an apology to the barmaid, 'but she flatly* ,told him she didn't want his dirtv'l apology, and that proceedings would be taken against him. These were instituted, and Heslip pleaded guilty to both charges, Mr Harvey appealing for him. The latter tried his utmost for his client in the way. of endeavoring to get the Court to take a lenient view of the case, but the S.M. said it always affected his judgment if such filthy language was made use of to females. Deliberately using it to a woman was greatly, different to using it under pressure of circumstances. Mr Harvey said that 'accused was willing to take a prohibition order out against himself , although it would be putting himself to great inconvenience. "What is his calling?" asked the bench. "A commission agent," was the reply. ''Oh, I know all about turf commission agents," said the. bench. Then oame Heslip's past record ; it loomed lip like a dark cloudon the horizon, and- things looked blue. Accused's police "testimonials" made him out to be A CROOK OP THE FIRST WATER. Mr Bishop said he intended putting his magisterial foot down 1 on this sort of business ; it was fair too common. A first offender he never had any wish to send to gaol, but a man with a record like that before him deserved not the slightest consideration. He wouldn't give him even the option of a fine, but would send him' down for a month. There are far too many of these spielers in Christohurch who haunt hotels and public thoroughfares —they seem to own them— who use lovely language when they get a wine or two in, and they badly need police supervision.
