A THUG OF SAMOA.
SITIVI SLUGGED OUT.
The End of a Desperate Career. | ■ ' f
It will be remembered that a' few i issues back we published the story, of the escape" from .'gaol and subsequent career of murder and rapine, of a notorious Samoan criminal named Sitivi. This week from Fijian papers to hand the sequel is learned. The "Samoanische Zeitung," of June, 16 says':—* . Last Sunday afternoon tne news was circulated about town that at last that desperate character, Sitivi, was put out of harms way. He was shot in the bush near Laulii and Luatuanuu by two young Samoans from Matafagatele, after he had made a desperate attempt to cut one , of them down with an axe to obtain, possession of the gun. The two Sanioaris took, possession, of the axe, a mosquito net, a blanket and several other articles which Sitivi had hidden in' the bush, and brought them into the police, where they, reported having shot Sitivi. ■ The same night the people of Lctogq, who were informed of the occurrence, brought the body of the murderer to Apia in a boat. After the inquest was held the body was. handed over to Sitivi's relations. The report of the death of this dangerous murderer soon spread, all over the town, and not a little excitement was evinced. The supposition that Sitivi was in hiding for some time, in the vicinity of his native town, proved to be correct. Since the whole of the villages in Upolu were commanded to pursue and cauture him, Sitivi did not feel safe in other districts, and retired once more to the districts of Laulii and Luatuanuu,, where he was sure of the support , of his relations. . We hear that during the past few days many arrests .been made of persons who had given the murderer shelter, and had otherwise assisted him. And we hear further that the Laulii and Luatuanuu villages have been heavily 'fined for harboring the criminal.
