BIRTHS AND DEATHS
FIGURES FOR 1926 REDUCING INFANTILE MORTALITY. The total number of births registered in urban areas of New Zealand for the year 1926 totalled 13,334. or 19.21 per 1000 of the population. Tho deaths totalled 6169, or 9.33 per 1000 of the population. Tho number of births is the highest which has been recorded in the last five years, although tho rate per 1000 is slightly below the average. Tile number of deaths is higher than for each of tho four preceding years, and the rate per 1000" is higher with one exception, that of 1923. when the rate was 9.57 per 1000. The increase in 1926 was doubtless trought about l>y tho epidemic of illness amongst children, which was Inter followed by tho outbreak of influenza, which was responsible for a great many deaths. Infantile mortality numbered 593, or 44.47 per 1000. a decrease on each of tho four preceding years
