SPEEDIER CABLES
HUMAN ELEMENT GOING INVENTION FOR TRANSMITTING RELAYS - REPLY TO WIRELESS By Telegraph.—Press Assn. —Copyright. Australian and N.Z. Cable Association. (Received January 20, 7.20 p.m.; LONDON, January 19. A striking; demonstration of the latest improvement in submarine telegraphy, known as the regenerator system, was given at the Eastern Cable Company's head office in London. The system is destined to bring Australia virtually to the doorstep of England. Stripped of all technicalities the regenerator, which is tho invention of tiie Eastern Company's own staff, cuts out the human element in relays and transmissions are done automatically, machinery passing on the messages with increased strength and even correcting errors en route. By moans of the regenerator direct communication was maintained to-day between one large group of journalists representing the British overeas Press in London and four Capetown journalists. The system will operate from London to Adelaide within three months. The South African PostmasterGeneral, Mr T Boydell. replying to an inaugural message sent by Sir John Denison-Pender. chairman of tho Eastern Extension Company, stated that: “Where cablegrams traverse South African land lines you may rely upon our continued efforts to pass them on with the utmost expedition.” The regenerator system promises
valuable speeding up of all classes of cablee between Britain and South Africa and later Australia. Mr Denison-Pender, junior, speaking at a luncheon following the demonstration, declared: “We do not fear the future. We cannot yield a point in argument to our wireless friends for their transmission cannot be speedier, more accurate or as secret as ours. The regenerator can fairly be described as the Eastern Company’s reply to wirejess.”
