TOURNEY AT AUCKLAND SOME FINE GAMES WITNESSED PLAYERS AT TOP OF FORM Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 20. The New Zealand bowling tourney was continued to-day in fine, hot weather. The rinks championship has been narrowed down to Stewart (Dunedin), two lives, and Benefield (St. John’s, Wanganui), one life. The details of the results in the fourth round are:—Stewart 18, beat Hayden (Takapuna) 12; Benefield 21, beat Walker (Auckland) 19; Laurenspn (Carlton) 25, beat Mcßohie (Remuera) 10; Pilkington (Hamilton), a bye. FIFTH ROUND. Pijkington 2 8 , beat Hayden 13; Stewart 16, beat Laurenson 13;. Benefield, a bye. SEMI-FINAL. i Benefield 22, beat Pilkipgton 6; Stewart, a bye. Owing to Stewart having two lives Benefield will have to heat hjpi twice to win the championship. In the pairs championship the last four green winners to go forward for post-section play were found as follow : Section B—Walker (Auckland); section L—Harraway (Green Island); section N—Armstrong (Pukekohe); section R —Pi!,..ugton (Hamilton). Thp post-section play in the pairs resulted Second Round —Bell (Hamilton) '7, boat Torrance (Ponspnhy) 16: Livingstone (Onehunga) 20, beat J. D, Smith (Dunedin) 24; heat Armstrong (Pukekohe) 12; Walker (Auckland) 29, beat Chapman (Rocky Nook) 10. Third Round—Prootor 22, beat Atkinson 20; Harraway 25, beat Livingstone 9; Be]l 17, beat Hutoliison 14. The following ore now left in the pairs:—Bell (Hamilton), Walker (Auckland), Harraway (Green Island), Pilkington (Hamilton), Prpctor (Remuera), Benefield (St. John’s). The only match in the singles championship was Clarke (Rocky Nook) 22, beat Maher (West End) 9- Besides Clarke the following are still left n: —Mclntyre (Hamilton), Bell, junr. (Hamilton), Walker (Auckland), Smellie (Green Island). Mclntyre is only a two-lifer. The programme for tomorrow is that Benefield will play Pilkipgton in the Becond round of the pairs competition in the ntorning, and will plqy Stewart in the rinks final in the afternoon. _
SEMI-FINAL DECIDED
' Sopie fine game® were witnessed in the rinks intersection play to-day. The contest between Benefield (St. John’s, Wanganui) and Walker (Auckland) provided ad exciting finish. The Wanganui players gtarted at the top of their form, find led at sixteen bead by 16 to 7. In the concluding stages, Walker made a great effort to draw into a winning position, the scores at the- commencement of the last head being, Benefield 20, Walker 19. The Wanganui team outdrew Auckland at the finish, Walker failing with his drives to avert defeat.
jStewart defeated Hayden ITokapuna) in a game in which the Dunedin team always held the upper band. At the conclusion of tlie twelfth' bead Stewart was 14 to Hayden’s 6. Hayden strove hard to reduce tlie. lead, but could only score occasional singles, the Dunedin men’s drawing for position being excellent, ' A number pf heads were burned by Hayden toward the finish, but Dunedin kept on their game and eventually wpn by 18 to 12. The Carlton team skipped by Laurenson, registered a decisive win against Maqrobie (Remuera). The game was keenly contested up to the twelfth head, when Carlton, with 10 points, had a lead of one, * In the next head Laurenson notched 4, and repeated the performance in the fifteenth, the scores then being 18 to 10 in Carlton’s favour. CarJton then went on to score three, one and two in sgecesive heads, winning by 24 to In the following round Stewart met Laurenson, and Pilkington played Hayden, Benefield getting a bye. Stewart’s team played very steadily from the opening bead, and always had ® shade the better of the draw shot. At the conclusion of the twelfth head the scores were, Stewart 10, Laurenson 8. The Dunedin team improved its position to 12—8 in the fourteenth. Laurenson scored 3 in tlie seventeenth head, bringing Carlton’s score to Id against Dunedin’s 16. The next head was burned by Carlton, and the time limit was exhausted, Stewart winning by 16 to 19. . Pilkington had an easy victory over Hayden- The Hamilton team soon not a substantial lead, the scores at the eleventh head being 11 -to 5 in Pilkington’* favour. Pilkington scored 6 in the next head, and at the fourteenth the scores wore 2(1 to a m 1 11kington’B favour., The game concluded at the eighteenth head, Pilkington being 28 and Hayden 13. . The semi-final proved an easy victory for Benefield’s team, which gave a groat exhibition of all-round play. The Hamilton team did not play partly, but time and again Benefield treated the ’‘Jack” with great drives or running shots, taking scores from his opponents. At the eleventh head Benefield’s soore was 11 to Pilkington s 5. The latter had added only one to his total when the eighteenth head was reached, the scores then being, Benefield , 22, Pilkington 6, when the latter retired.
