The old actor had at last managed t 9 borrow half-a crown. His suppers had not been substantial for some time, 60 bo bought himself the largest and juciest steak possible. He took it to his lodgings, summoned his landlady, and addressed her in his richest and moot impressive voice: “Mrs Gr-r-r-een! You see here a steak ?”—"Yessir." “Ve-er-ry well, Mrs Green. You will take a saucepan—a large saucepan—and fill it with cold water?**—“Ycssir, certainly, sir!” “You will apply heat to the saucepan, until the water boils?**— <r Yessir/* “Further, -Mrs Gr-r-r-een, when the water boils, you will throw the steak into it?”—“Oh, certainly, sir!” “Quite so, Mrs Gr-r-r-een. And, having thrown my steak into the boiling water, you wil proceed to stew it for hours until it is completely white?”— “Oh, yos; certainly, sir/' "I thought you would! I'll have to cook the wretched thing myself!*’
