THE ORIGIN OF THE MATCH
The common match has celebrated Us ninetieth birthday, and few who give thank* thax they were not born in the. days of flint and spills will remember that they owe the invention to a Hungarian analytical chemist named Janos Jrinyi. In 1836 Jrinyi was successful where his professor had failed, and produced a match which obediently flared by using phosphorous instead of sulphur He sold hia invention for 60 gulden. Later, in 1846. he founded a match factory, but work was stopped by Hie Hungarian Revolution in 1848. In 1805 Irinvi died, like many another jnvcntor,of an indispensable commodity, »i great poverty.
