CAPTAIN WILSON HONOURED
VARIED SEA EXPERIENCES PRESENTATION ON RETIREMENT. AUCKLAND, January 17. A presentation of a silver inscribed case of pipes was tendered to .Captain J. Wilson upon his retirement from the Northern *S.S. Co., Ltd., by the masters and officers of the Merchant Service Guild. Captain E. Darling (chairman), in his address to Captain Wilson, spoke of the long years of service in the Northern Steamship Co., Ltd., when Captain Wilson firet joined in 1884 and ran the trade in the Mercury Bay service. Captain Wilson, in reply, spoke of his varied sea experiences from the year 1872, when in the Perseverance he was in the coasting, Baltic and Mediterranean trades. rLe arrived in New Zealand in the year 1878, finally coming to Auckland with Captain George McKenzie in the schooner Saxon. After joining Messers Fraser and Tinne's Rotomnhana, he later returned to England in the New Zealand Shipping Company's ship Waipa until 1880, and returned to YVellington in the Ben Vinue. After service on the Australian coast in the ship Loch Ryan, and again in the Baltic, he returned to Auckland in the borquentine Duke of Richmond in 1883, joining the Northern Steamship Company. When the late Mr Ransom reconstructed the affairs of tho company. Captain Wilson joined their steamer Muritai, and since 1890 he has sailed in practically every vessel and every trade that the Northern Steamship Company, Ltd., started.
The large gathering of masters and officers endorsed the sentiments of Captain Dorling (chairman) in congratulating Captain Wilson upon his long and successful service as a master and member of the Merchant Service Guild.
