WELLINGTON SUMMER MEETING
RAPIER WINS CUP IN EXCITING FINISH
WELLINGTON STAKES TO LIMITED
OUTSIDER BOOSTER TAKES OPEN SPRINT
The summer meeting of the Wellington Racing Club was opened at Trentham yesterday in perfect weather. There was at times a suggestion of rain in the air, but though a few drops fell, the day was passed by without any serious moisture. The track and the course surroundings were in perfect order, and some very fast times were registered during the day. Limited ran a race record in the Wellington Stakes, while Booster ran one of the best six furlongs ever put up on the course. There was a very big crowd in attendance, and there were many new faces on the official stand. Quite a number of visitors from overseas were present, and they were loud in their praise of the racing and the manner in which it was conducted.
The dub’s handioapper, Mr H. Coyle, has every reason to be proud of the day’s results, and he gave the judge, Mr W. P. Russell, some strenuous tasks.
The Wellington, Cup was won by the narrowest of margins by the Riccarton trained Rapier, who won the Marten Cup at New Year. The unlueky Te Monanui filled the berth of runner-up, while Rapine, with his welter weight, was third, after putting in a phenomenal run. Lysander, who looked tucked up, failed te help the punters in the Wellington Stakes, which was won by Limited, who on Boxing Day filled the berth of runner-up to High Pitch in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie. The two-yepr-old Silvermine hung on too well to allow Lysander to reward his supporters with any dividend. An outsider in Booster won the Telegraph Handicap, and won it really well. 1 In November last the Solferino gelding ran a fine fourth in the Stewards' Handicap at Riccarton, but on the day most people forgot this fact. The minor places were filled by two other south hqrses in Paperohaso and Corn Money. The backers of favourites did not have the best ran during the day, for only two favourites won (Stormy and Ring the Bell), For the day the totalisator handled £47,193, as against £48,319 on- the corresponding day last year. Wedding March and Capitulation were taken out of the Trentham High Weight Handicap, leaving eleven, runners. Mint Leaf was the beet fancied from the outset, but at the finish of operations Outfit was nearly as well supported. Others with money on were Kumiss and Oriflamb. A good start saw Alaric begin best and he led past the seven from Oriflamb, Kilmiss, Tannadice, Outfit, and Bennanee with Tolyastra next while the favourite was tailed off. Oriflamb bad taken the lead over on the far turn and there was little alteration in the order, the only difference being Outfit had moved up into thitd berth. Oriflamb was first to turn for home and when he straightened up he had Outfit as his nearest attendant, with the rest some lengths hack. Outfit had the upper hand of Oriflamb at the furlong post, and drawing out over the last hit won by a length. Mint Leaf, who was still setting the field a big break into the home stretch, finished very fast and was a neck away third, and then followed another three lengths away Ardfinnan, Bennanee, The Tank, and Kilmiss, with a gap to the next lot. STAKES TO LIMITED They all faced the barrier for the Wellington Stakes. High Finance gave some trouble during , her preliminary jumping the fence at the old four furlong post, and eventually her rider jumped off her. Lysander was a very hot proposition, and was backed down to a short price. Prior to the start Silvermine got rid of her rider, but in the end they went away to a good start. The pace was clapped on from the outset, and Limited, Auratum, Sudden Storm, Silvermine, and High Finanoe were leading with the favourite, and Lorna Doone together last. Limited had an advantage passing the false rail from Silvermine and High Finance, while Lysander was endeavouring to bridge the gap. At the distance Limited was doing it nicely, while both Silvermine and Lysander were being hard ridden. Limited won by just over a, length while Silvermine kept Lysander at bay, having half a length io the good. There was a couple of lengths to High Finance, and then came Sudden Storm and Auratum, with Lorna Doone beaten off. There were numerous scratchwgs for the Apprentices’ Plate, and as was expected the much-discussed Stormy was the medium of some solid bets. He wound up favourite frota Queen’s Choice and Bank Note. No Favours was actually first to show out, but he was soon displaced by Stormy and Aston and the pair led past the five furlong post from Bank Note, No Favours, Hyinill. and Royal Land. Stormy was a little to the better at A6ton as the field turned for home with a big hunch just in behind them. Stormy was doing his task with ease at the distance, and he passed the post with nearly a length to spare. Two horses which were chopped out at the start—-Assurance and Queen’s Choice—filled the minor plaees, the former being a half length to the good. Battle Colours was fourth .with Horomea, Aston, No Favours and Bank Note next to finish. Pangolin fell just after the start. An inquiry, was held into the fall, and after deliberation the rider of Pangolin was suspended for one month for careless riding. A field of seventeen contested the Fitzhcrbert Handicap and the Taranaki trained Melissa came in, for heavy support, winding up a good favourite from Thaw, while the only others backed were Reckless and the Riddiford quartette. Polydectes appeared to begin best and coming down the course he was leading from Panther with the favourite. Reckless and Priceless thereabouts. Passing the false rail there were four in a line—Reckless, Panther, Melissa and Polydectes—and those in behind were Thaw and Otairi. Alongside the distance there was every possibility of a good raoo, hut Thaw drew up on the outside, and finishing strongly won by three parts of a length. Melissa just managed to heat off Otairi by a head, and the next to finish wore Tone.- Panther, Chips, Marsurd and Rory More. WELL-CONDITIONED FIELD FOR CUP The Wellington Clip field paraded minus two of the accepters—Tnnadees and Oroum. It was a well conditioned field, end each and all was eagerly scanned in the birdcage! It was hard to find fault with any of the runners, but several of them appealed more than the others. Notably ‘were the oases of
Footfall, Star Stranger,. Count Cavour, Mandane, Rapier, and Hynanha, while Rapine looked his usual self. Te Monanui appeared to be in need of a good gallop to bring him to concert pitch. The bracketed pair, Rapine and Star Stranger, were first fancy on the machine, carrying nearly £250 more than the next in demand, Te Monanui. Others with many supporters were Hynanna, the bracket, Piuthair and Clarinda, and Footfall. The field went away to an excellent start, and the first two to actually to show out were Count Cavour and Cjvility, but passing the stand the order was Fresco, Count Cavcrnr, Mask, Clarinda, Rapier, Piuthair, Footfall, l’e Monanui, Star Ranger, Merry Day, and Mandiane, with Rapine and Star Stranger tailed off. Mask had joined Fresco passing the mile post and the pair held sway from Clarinda, Count Cavour, Royal Mint, who had moved up from the back of the field, Footfall, Rapier, Merry Day, and Star Ranger, with Piuthair and Mandane next. There was next to no change at the six, where the favourite pair-were still tailing the field. Mask had just a neok the better of it as they went over on the far turn and Count Cavour was still handy, while alongside of him were Rapier, Footfall, Clarinda, and Te Monanui. Mask and Fresco led into the straight from Rapier on the out; side, while Clarinda' and Te Monanui were in behind and Rapine waa starting to make his effort. At the two furlong post Rapier had the race won, hut he no sooner got a break on the field than Te Monanui salt sail after him, and in a titanic struggle Rapier managed to keep his nose in front, though a stride past the post he was second. Rapine kept up the wonderful run he started on the turn and was a length and a half away third, jurt a shade in front of Footfall, Piuthair, and Hynanna. Then followed Star Stranger and Clarinda, with Star Ranger and Fresco the last to finish, A rush of money made Ring the Bell favourite for the Anniversary Handicap from the southerner, Centrepiece. The two favourites jumped away best, but once the field, was on its legs Penman, ran to the front, and he led Centrepiece, Ring the'Bell, and Decoy Bird, with Perle dp Leon last. Ring the Bell went up to Penman turning for home, and the pair led on to the course proper from Decoy Bird and Centrepiece. The last-named made an effort passing the false rail, hut it was short lived, and this left Ring the Bell a shade in front of Penman. The Aucklander bad most to spare in the run. to the post, and won by a length. A similar distance separated Penman and Joy Bird, With Centrepieoe and Decoy Bird next. Inferno behaved badly prior to the start and, in all, galloped aver twice round. He , was taken hack to the post, but at the rise of the barrier he .jumped backwards and took no part in the race. TELEGRAPH TO BOOSTER. High Pitoh was a solid favourite for the Telegraph Handicap, for whioh there, were eighteen runners. Shirley was second favourite, and the bracket Reremoana and Lady Cavendish third. Corn Money began best, and led down to the course proper from Paperchase and Mimetio with Shirley most prominent of the others. Corn Money was first to reach the course proper, and had as his nearest attendants Paperohase, Mimetic, Shirley and High Pitch with The Hawk and Booster next. Paperchase was the winner at the furlong post, but Booster came with a strong challenge on the outside, and won by half a length. Paperchase was a similar distanoe in front of Corn Money; with Shirley fourth, and Grand Knight, Reremoana, High Pitch and The Hawk next to finish. There was a good pool for the concluding event, Kilmezzo having the most friends. Royal Picture and King’s Folly were also well in the' market. Lady Ideal was one of the best beginners, and coming down the track to the course proper she was in front with Royal Picture, King’s Folly and Great Day. Starboard Light came up on the outside of the field at the entrance to the course proper, and ranging alongside the leaders at the distance he finished with a burst and won by a length and a half. Lady Ideal hung on well in second place, and beat the fast finishing Vesperus by half a length. 'Gold Mint also came from well back, and he was fourth, and then came King’s Folly, Great Day, and Minotus. Results in detail:— TRENTHAM HIGH WEIGHT HANDICAP, Of 300 eovs; one mile. 3 W.
