EXTRA RACES
QUESTION OF PERMITS STATEMENT BY MINISTER. In reply to a message sent from Christchurch, and published yesterday, in respect to racing permits during the visit of the 'Duke and Duchess of Yorjs, the Minister for Internal Affairs has issued a statement to the effept that ’the arrangement of dates for both racing and trotting meetings was a matter entirely for the two conferences. He had never attempted to interfere with tlie dates of meetings or with the general internal workings of a racing or trotting club. His function was solely the granting of totalisator permits. “I notice,” said the Minister, “that the C.J.C. proposes to ask the Racing Conference for permission to change its dates so that the club will be able to hold a meeting when their Royal Highnesses are in Christchurch. That, of course, the club is entitled to do; it is not my function, but I cannot see the wisdom of holding both a galloping and trotting meeting on the same day. “However, if the Racing Conference agrees to the change of dates, then it becomes a question tor me to consider the issuing of a license. I repeat that the matter of altering dates is purely one for the racing and trotibg conferences to decide.”
