WELLINGTON SUMMER MEETING

TO-DAY'S FIELDS AND RUNNERS REVIEWED SPLENDID RACING SHOULD Bp WITNESSED The Wellington Racing Club’s summer carnival will be commenced on the club’s picturesque property at Trentham to-day. The gathering shpuld be the most successful since the boom years, and Secretary J. M. Griffiths has .everything in order to handle big crowds. Wellington is full of visitors, and accommodation is at a premium. Never before has such a representative gathering of racing men collected in the Capital C ity. Every town in the Dominion has sent its quota, and in addition there is more than a fair sprinkling of Australian and oversea racing men.

Racing, which is timed to start at noon, should be of a very high-class standard. Practically all the best handicap performers in the land are engaged in the two major events, while one of the best of his age, in Lysander, is to bo a competitor in the Wellington States, a weight-for-age race, with penalties and allowances. The hack races have all filled exceedingly well, and there will be seen in action some horses, who, in the near future, will be competing in far better company. Arrangements have been made for a frequent train service, and those travelling by this means of transport will be carried to and fro with the utmost dispatch. .The ir*") with the

Tho event is open to hurdle and steeplechase horses and also horses eligible to' run in hack fiat races. Runners are to be ridden by horsemen who earn their livelihood riding over fences. There is'a field of fourteen, and tho betting may be evenly divided. Alnric is generally thought to bo something in the nature of a rogue, but he won at Waipukurau on Boxing Day, and the change of stable's may have altered his temperament. Mint Leaf, Bennanec, and Outfit carry weight well, while over the holidays Oriflamb was a winner down the TJgst Coast. Horses that promise to run "prominently are .Mint Leaf, Bennanee, and Outfit. Then follows a race that may not see a great volume of betting. It is the . WELLINGTON STAKES,

Lysander will be at a short price, and though ho has to shoulder a full penalty of fourteen pounds he is big enough 7 to carry out the task. After contesting the Derby at Ellerslie ho went off a little, but since then he has freshened up remarkably, and is now back to his best. Limited should bo tho one to trouble him most, while Silver Mine is a very promising two-year-old. There is IT collection of good hacks in tho „ APPRENTICES' PLATE, Of 300 sovs; seven furlongs.

A runner will bo Stormy, who has been so much before the public of late. Consequent on liis eecond to Paperchase the last day at Ellerslie he should be at a short price, but he will need to be at his bast to pull his backers through. Aston has been shaping: well in his work, and the Irish-bred, horse will bo in the running. Another who, in the spring, showed he was above the average is Queen’s Choice. He caught a cold at the last Trentham meeting, and it took him a long while to shake it Off. If anywhere near his best to-day he will give Stormy and Aston most trouble. There is a big field of youngsters in the

EITZHERBEBT HANDICAP, Of 850 sovsfive furlongs.

Though the race is for two-year-olds who have not won a race exceeding the value of 200 eovs at time of starting, there are several winners engaged. In such a large field tho draw for positions will play its part. Coming from such a powerful stable it will occasion no surprise to find Melissa favourite. Reckless won easily one day at Tauherenikau, while Polydectes was a dual winner over the holidays. In November Chips won a double at Te Rapa. Mandy is another winner. Thaw is coming along with racing, and with Melissa and Polydectes may have a say in the finish. The next event is the race of the day:

Everything points to the acceptance of eighteen going to the post. There will be two brackets. Rapine and Star Stranger and Fiuthair and Clarinda. The track is, in one way, going to favour the topweights, , but in another—the lesser weights will literally fly on the ground—it will not.

The Williams bracket will 'be favand both are ready to run the race of their lives. Of the pair Rapine is most fancied. He won the Summer Clip at Ellerslie with one pound more and on that day another two furlongs would not have stopped him. Count Cavour, though he beat Rapine the last time they met, at even weights, will possibly not be able to finsh in front this time. The chestnut is a real good horse, better than most people in Wellington realise. Tho fact that on the Treutham course ho has never shown to advantage will, however, have to be borne in mind. Over a similar distance the third dav nt Ellerslie Te Monnnui registered a splendid performance, (hough lie only ran third Last year he Vn« ingly unlucky in not. winning, and it is generally conceded that he is a better

horse this year. He is a master of weight, and given ordinary luck during the race' he will be going very strongly at the finish.

The Auckland Cup winner, Tanadees, is seen to best advantage on a wet track, and the hard ground may prove, to he his undoing. Once a great battler in welter races Footfall is now in the first flighty of handicap horses. He is, if anything, better than he was at Ellerslie, and though he has more weight he should be able to manage that. However, he may be just too near to some of the ton-weights. Mask will need to improve over one hundred per cent, on the Auckland Cup display to be a possibility. He perhaps can be rated just moderate class. Civility has been breaking the watches at Wanganui in her training, and she is one of the last minute fancies. She was tried over the distance in the spring (with a .deal more weight) and failed. The last bit may just be too much for her again to-day. Mandnne, as a three-ycar-old, last spring showed good form, but has since failed to repeat it. She let her party down at Auckland, and for this reason she will not be in the boom to-day. Her case is somewhat peculiar and it would be unwise to pass her by altogether. Rapier won the Marton Cup well, but will have two furlongs further to go today. He needs hard, riding and at his weight it is going to be a hard job for a light boy to get the best out of him. Hynanna, on his work, will claim many friends, but the task is a severe one for a three-year-old. To date the chestnut has shown he is a bit more than useful, but there is nobbing to say he is tip to the class he is asked to take on to-day. There will be any amount of money for the coupled pair, Piyithair and Clarinda, and despite the Auckland form they will go very well indeed. Tfi fact they look, on paper, to be the dangerous ones of the lightweights. Star Ranger will not be fancied to any extent. Oreum may be one of the pacemakers, and for over a mile will be in the thick of it, but from then on it may be another story. Royal Mint won the Stratford Cup, heating Euphonium by a head, and on that form is not a likely winner. Fresco will race well, and down south he is given a chance of upsetting the heavyweights. The records of the race are against the top-weights, but there is always an exception to the rule. Perhaps to-day it will be in evidence. Te Monanui and the two brackets, Rapine-Star

Stranger and Piuthair-Clarinda, will race with honour to themselves. There is only a small field in the

loon 8 8 Though there are nine runners there is a chance of several of them giving the starter some trouble. Centrepiece Penman and Joy Bird comprise a trio that have recent form. The second leg is the

Seldom before has such an array of talent gone to the post at Trentham, and the job of sorting out the dividend payers is going to be a hard one,’ With so many speedy horses in light the topweights are going to be set a stiff task and it is. possible they will fail. The bracket Reremoana-Lady Cavendish, will come in-for plenty of support, while The Hawk will be in the market after his win at Ellerslie. Royal Damon may show up best of the eight stone and up division, though" High Pitch must not be passed by, though he failed after winning the Railway Handicap. He will appreciate the long straight. Shirley likes the course, and hers is a case of courses for horses. Deluge is another that has been partial to the track, and he is 6aid to have had bad luck at Ellerslie. Two on the 7.7 mark are Paperchase and Booster, and they both sprint well. Ballymoy 11. may be the best of the others, though there will., be some Taranaki money for Benzora, after his showing at New Plymouth. Shirley, High Pitch and Cox's pair Reremoana and Lady Cavendish, promise to be in the picture. There will he over twenty runners in the final race, the

With so many smart hacks engaged the issue is not tod clear. Riders and post positions will be all important. Great Day, Kilraezzo and Vesperus will all have their admirers.

In the Wellington Cup Rapine will ridden by B. H. Morris, Star Stranger by Roy Reed, and Piuthair by T. Green. So far the names of the riders of Rapier and Clarinda are not available.
