CRICKET TEAM FOR ENGLAND
THE NOMINATIONS FOURTEEN TO BE SELECTED. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, January 18. Nominations from the cricket associations and sub-associations were received at last night’s meeting of the Management Committee of the New Zealand Cricket Council. The Wellington Association has nominated twelve players. The team is to consist of fourteen. No nominations have been received from Canterbury, hut this fact will not prejudice the chances of any of the Canterbury players as the selectors have the right to go outside the players nominated. All the players nominated will be able to make the tour if selected with the exception of J. S. Hiddleston, about whom there is a doubt. 1 The following are the nominations received:— Manawatu. —N. It was stated by Mr D. Reese that the announcement made that the whole of the New Zealand cricket team for the English tour would be picked after the Auckland-Wellington Plunket Shield game was not correct. The unanimous decision of the committee was that sight “certainties” should be selected after the Auokland-Welling-ton game, and that the other members should he picked later. This was. doubly necesjnry in view of; the m£E of the MelbJkrno Oriohet dub’s teWf? aa the formfshown by players ipfpy 'matches ogamst team wouw-he a guide to the'-selectors. It (was decided to communicate with the selectors on. the matter. N.Z. TEAMANTICIPATIONS^ AN OPijHON FROM; OTAGO. ‘TO ’Says “MiSon,”-cricket writer in 3* “Star”:—There will be a lot of J**tere&t in, the Plunket Shield match, which is to he played at Auckland, hut not because anyone, with the possible exception of the Aucklanders, have any doubts about who will win it. It will finally settle the matter as to how many representatives Wellington will have in the New Zealand team. Those who are indulging in the popular pastime of picking the card seemed to be convinced .that Wellington will have at least half. At the beginning of the season the prospects of seven Aucklanders were being freely canvassed, but four of these have done very little to justify premature whooping in their favour, and three will be about Auckland’s fair portion. It is understood that Dickinson, the Otago fast bowler who failed in Plunket Shield matches this season. has secured' a medical" certificate to {he effect that he has been suffering from knotted shoulder muscles. Medical opinion is that the trouble will disappear under treatment. This is likely to have a big influence on the New Zealand selectors.
