REMUERA’S MAILS
EXTENT OF DAMAGE MANY PARCELS BURNT LETTERS UNTOUCHED In referring to the destruction mail matter on the R.M.S. Remuera, which arrived at Wellington on Monday from the United Kingdom, the Postmaster-General announced yester--1 day for the information of the public that approximately 62 bags of parcels and papers were seriously damaged. The mail consisted of 1112 bags. Of those damaged, fourteen were for Auckland and district, thirteen for Christchurch and district, six for Dunedin and district, and nineteen for Wellington and district. A large number of parcels have been damaged by the fire, and these are now being closely examined by the postal officers in an endeavour to have delivery effected to the addressees. The origin of the fire is unknown, it having occurred in the mail locker shortly after the steamer left Panama. The letter portion of the mail, which was contained in another part of the hold, was not damaged.
