OUTBREAK OF ’FLU

CASES ON THE CONTINENT NO NOTEWORTHY INCREASE MINISTER INFORMED Tho position regarding the outbreak of influenza in England and om the Continent is summarised in a cable which the Minister for Health (the Hon. J. A. Young) has received from the High Commissioner for New Zealand at Home (Sir Jas. Parr) in the following terms: — “Your telegram of January 7th regarding influenza figures for Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Germany, and Hungary shows no noteworthy increase, but increases are reported from France and Switzerland. “There were 55 deaths in Paris for the fortnight ending December 17th, and 150 deaths for the fortnight ending December 2oth. “In Switzerland there was a large increase in the number of cases—from #l3 to 4107 for the same period, but there were few deaths. “In England and AVales there have been os yet no outbreaks of any magnitude ; but, as is usual at this time of year, colds are fairly prevalent, though the death returns —106 in the great towns—show these are not of a serious nature.

“The type so far presents no resemblance to that of 1918, and the mortality is mainly confined to people of advanced age.”

Australian and N.Z. Gable Association. (Received January 11, 8.50 p.m.) LONDON, January 11.

In response to many requests, notably from the United States and Australia, a wireless medical bulletin will be circulated throughout the world from Geneva by the League of Nations, giving tlie latest facts about the influenza epidemic sweeping Europe. The epidemic in Switzerland continues to be most serious, though the deaths are chiefly confined to children or the aged. The deaths include that of an Australian boy, Henry Moreton, of Brisbane. There are 3847 patients at Basle alone.
