ADVANCE OF WIRELESS

BEAM SYSTEM TO AUSTRALIA OPERATING SHORTLY RADIO ’PHONE NEXT YEAR MARCONIS GAINING EXPERIENCE. FROM ATLANTIC SERVICE A year hence, it is predicted, n wireless telephone service, similar to that between England and America, will be in operation between England and Australia.

fly Telegraph.—Pres* Assn—Copyright Australian and N.Z. Cable Association,

(Received January 11, 8.5 p.m.) LONDON, January 10. As the result of a three days' test of the Australian beam system during the week-end Marconis maintained a speed of 300 words a minute. They are therefore dispensing with the sevenda ytest, as was the case with Canada, and will hand over the system to the Post Office on Wednesday for a week’s test. If this is satisfactory the service will open immediately.

It is understood that there is no hope of a variation of the decision that the charges should be two-thirds of the cable rates at the time the contract was signed.

It is understood also that Marconis offered to begin wireless telephonytests to Australia within the space of a few weeks, but the Port Office wishes

to concentrate on the, perfection of wireless telegraphy first, and also to profit by the experience of tho com & laxities of telephony with America. or instance, yesterday, in the trial with Ottawa, a London speaker’s words came back as an echo in liis ears in a few seconds. The elimination of this, and also tho achievement of complete secrecy, are problems to be solved The records show that both South Africa and New Zealand heard talks with America, but only isolated snatches of one voice only. “Wo are confident that a year hence telephony to Australia will be in operation as a commercial proposition. It may be erratic at times, but it will be quite workable at certain periods -}f the day. We think a short-wave length will facilitate it. Furthermore, it is a hopeful sign that the shortwave service to Cairo goe9 on when the trans-Atlantic completely fades out.” This was the opinion expressed by a high official who is in daily touch with all experiments.
